There's something so beautiful about being a part of your children's soaking up of knowledge.
Today we started our school season with a fun science project out of Apologia's "Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy & Physiology". We did the "Edible Cell" project.
Jello "Cells" with "Organelles" ready to be placed |
Centrioles & Mitochondria |
Lysosomes & Golgi Body |
Ribosomes, Nucleus, & Endoplasmic Reticulum |
Once the Jello hardened, the girls were able to place the "organelles" into their cell.
The girls had their "Cell Wheel" (from the Notebooking Journal) they had created as a reference - so as the different organelles were being placed into the cell, they'd tell me the function of each one.

My hubby even got involved...because it was candy ;) So he added LOTS of organelles! |
It was a wonderful day back at school - and a small taste of an amazing year to come...I am believing it!!!!!
I didn't realize how much I love & missed doing school because by the end of our last school year, we were about ready to hang each other off the roof by the toes - and very ready for a break. I think my favorite scripture when it comes to teaching my girls is Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the
Lord’s mercy and loving-kindness that we are not consumed, because His
[tender] compassions fail not.
23 They are new every
morning; great and abundant is Your stability and faithfulness.
And one of the most beautiful gifts is that my girls mirror God's mercy during those days when I need EXTRA...because there are times it seems my "receive-mercy tokens" should have run out.
I was grateful for the break so I could step back, PRAY and implement new "policies" to make the year just that much smoother, more fun & productive. By the time they graduate, we'll have it all figured out...NOT!
So here's to an AMAZING year for us, and all you wonderful homeschool families out there!!
Eating the Cell - YUMMY! |
Great project!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWelcome Back! It IS going to be a great year!!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a really fun project too - what a way to start!
AAAAAAAAAAMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DeleteThanks for dropping by my blog and leaving a fun comment. What was even better, coming back to your blog and finding your enthusiasm and spiritual encouragement to begin a new year. I needed to read this today! Been teaching a long time and am dragging my feet a little. Thanks!

You are most welcome! That's why I love this community...we all have our good days, and rough ones and need reminding we need JESUS & each other for encouragement & support. **with pom-poms** "You can do it - go team Mindy"!!
DeleteWhat a great project! I'd have liked science in school a lot more if we got to do fun things like this. Your children are very blessed indeed to have you for a mother and teacher. Thank you so much for linking up with NOBH! Smiles!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, and I know what you mean! I'm a hands on learner (like my girls) so I don't want to torture them with the boring type of school I went through ;)
DeleteLooks cool! This gets me so excited about the future years of homeschooling!
ReplyDeleteI saw the preschool work you're doing, Joanie - great stuff! I used some of the same things when my girls were younger too - like the fridge letters...they loved that! Then you can get the one that makes 3 letter words - and the letters you have fits in that one too so they have LOTS to work with ;)
DeleteI LOVE this Christy! It brings back memories of when we did it! You guys did a great job! Looks like everyone had fun (hubs included). What a great start to the year!
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't mind, but I shared this on my fb page.
Blessings!
Of course not! It was fun - hubs called his the "mutant cell". I'm believing for ALL us homeschoolers that it's going to be an amazing peaceful year!!!
DeleteSounds like something my husband would do! Did he end up eating it?!!
DeleteThanks for sharing your day. We're unschoolers in Australia and love hearing about other homeschoolers' lives and meeting them as we travel!
ReplyDeleteI love that cell project! I bet all the information sticks in your children's minds, too, since you've made it so enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteChristy - Can I use this post in my Apologia round up? Pretty please? You guys did such a nice job on this project!
ReplyDeleteOf course you can! I'm honored, thank you!
